Survived by his loving wife, Eileen; son, David; and grandsons Scott and Troy. Born in Burnaby, later moving with his family to Calgary, his schooling complete, his first job was with Smith Corona Business Machines, having out done the dozens of applicants by showing up on his bicycle prepared to deliver machines in the -0 degree weather. Introduced to the miracles of amateur radio by his uncle Frank, a logical choice to further that interest was the landlocked R.C.N.V.R. He joined in 1937 and spent most of any holidays on the parade square. He was sent to the West Coast at the outbreak of WW2, drafted to the R.C.N. proper and the Good Ship “HMCS Miramichi. ” P.O. Tel. Neilson was tasked with setting up wireless stations at various choice locations such as Bella Coola, Ucluelet, Prince Rupert, and his all time favourite, a little rock in Upper Johnstone Strait, “Yorke Island. ” Married to his beloved Eileen in 1942, then shipped off to signal schools in Halifax and St. Hyacinthe. At wars end he returned to Victoria to work for the business machines division of Dockyard and later to the Provincial Government Repair Division in 1947, retiring as foreman in 1976. During
this time he built the family home on Admirals Road, raised son David, and spent his Golden Years travelling the world, visiting the property at Sulpherous Lake, gardening and maintaining an active interest in amateur radio. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses at Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their patience and caring understanding during Dad’s declining weeks. No service by request, but hoist a tot, and remember him in each your own way . . . VE7FDV Silent Key, 73s and 88s to all . . . the old sailor has crossed the bar. 520395
Beloved husband of Joyce for 61 years. Loving father to Fred (Heather), John (Paulette) and Joanne. Grandpa to Jon, Nicole, Ken and David. Brother to Gordon (Kay) and Marg Locke (Charlie). Fred was a Veteran of WWII and the RCAF, Bell Canada employee for 38 years. He will be fondly remembered by the customers and
staff at Strang’s valu-mart where he volunteered at the front of the store for many years afterwards. Throughout his life, Fred enjoyed helping others with his technical skills and was also involved with several organizations including the Boy Scouts, Scarborough and Minden Amateur Radio clubs and the Experimental Aircraft Association. Fred was a private pilot and also a Gliding instructor and taught The History of Flight with the Air Cadets. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed helping them out whenever the opportunity presented. Fred’s Crystal Lake cottage vision and subsequent legacy serves as a living reminder of his foresight and family focus. Family and friends will be received at Monk Funeral Home, 6 Helen Street, Bobcaygeon (705-738-3222 or 866-393-0063) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at Monk Funeral Home on Friday, December 12th, 2008 at 11 a.m. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers of Case Manor, Bobcaygeon for making Fred’s stay as comfortable as possible. He was born and raised in Biggar, Sask., and no matter where he traveled; Biggar was still `Home’ to him. Left to mourn his passing are Lois, his loving wife of 54 years, daughter Wendy of Saskatoon, son Dale (Cheryl) of Vancouver, BC, son Darren (Suzy) of London, England, brother Duncan (Mickey) of Winnipeg, sisterin-law Karen Mack (Gary) of Red Deer, AB, and numerous nieces and nephews, and uncountable friends. Wally was pre-deceased by his son Bradley Earnest in 1987, his daughter Laura Ann in 2000, his sister Muriel McKeen, and another sister Betty McKenzie. He worked at the CNR Express, the Roundhouse, and as a locomotive fireman before moving his family to Toronto in 1958 to take a course at the Radio College of Canada. He was employed by the Government of Canada as a Radio Operator and was first stationed in Sioux Lookout, ON, in 1959. The family then traveled to Chesterfield Inlet, NWT, to Fort Churchill, MB, to Prince Albert, SK, Resolute Bay, NWT, and he finally settled down in Saskatoon in 1971. He worked at the Saskatoon Airport until his retirement in 1989. After retiring he and Lois spent several years traveling to Mesa, AZ during the winter months, returning to Mistussine on Lake Diefenbaker during the summer months to live at a cabin they had built there. In 2000 they sold the cabin at the lake, and Wally and Lois returned to live in Saskatoon. Wally enjoyed an active retirement; he was a member of the Saskatoon Ham Radio Club, and enjoyed square and round dancing. He loved helping people, and volunteered his time generously to assist where needed, including the Santa Parade, the Charity Run, and at Remembrance Day Services. They enjoyed cruising, touring the British Isles and visiting family and friends. Wally was a devoted husband and father, and will be sadly missed by his family. The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude to all of the nurses and doctors at the Oncology Clinic in Royal University Hospital for helping to make his cancer bearable for the past 6 years. A private family interment took place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens prior to the service. The Memorial Service for Wally will be held Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Acadia Drive Funeral Chapel 915 Acadia Drive. Please consider a donation in Wally’s memory to the RUH Oncology Ward and Cancer Center, Saskatoon Cancer Centre, 20 Campus Drive Saskatoon, SK S7N 4H4. Condolences may be expressed through www.mem.com . Arrangements have been entrusted to David Schurr of Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Centre 955-1600. Honoured Provider of Dignity Memorial.
